The answer so far
Oxytocin is a peptide messenger made by the body. It helps the womb contract during labour and milk flow during breastfeeding, and it also participates in signalling in the brain. Calling it the “love hormone” is a catchy shorthand, not proof that a spray creates trust, attachment or better relationships.125

One messenger, several stories
A pregnant person may hear about oxytocin in a delivery room; someone else may encounter it in a nasal spray advertised for connection. The name is the same, but the situation, product, route and evidence are different. A hormone is a chemical messenger: its effects depend on where it acts and which cells can respond.13
- Made by the bodyOxytocin participates in brain signalling, contractions and milk release.
- Hospital injectionA specific medicine can support labour or control bleeding under supervision.
- Trust gameResearchers measure decisions in a controlled setting, not a whole relationship.
- Online nasal sprayContents, regulation and effects must be assessed for the exact product.
What does the body make it for?
Nerve cells in the hypothalamus, a region of the brain, make oxytocin. It can be released into the bloodstream from the pituitary gland. It helps the uterus contract during labour and helps release milk during breastfeeding. Milk release is different from milk production, which involves another hormone, prolactin. Oxytocin also acts in brain signalling; this does not mean that a single blood level tells us how much trust or affection someone feels.12
Why is it called the love hormone?
Scientists have investigated oxytocin in social behaviour and attachment. A well-known 2005 experiment reported more trusting choices in a laboratory money game after an oxytocin nasal spray; a larger, preregistered replication did not support a simple general trust effect. A game measures a particular choice, not a whole relationship. Follow what the trust and clinical studies actually tested.45
Is this the medicine used during childbirth?
Synthetic oxytocin is used in obstetric care. For example, the US label for the injection Pitocin includes medically indicated induction or reinforcement of labour and control of bleeding after birth. It calls for hospital supervision when used to initiate or strengthen labour. The label warns that excessive uterine stimulation can cause uterine rupture or reduce oxygen reaching the baby. It also reports water intoxication, sometimes with seizures, during prolonged infusion. Monitoring by trained obstetric staff is part of the labelled hospital use. This label applies to a specific US injection, not every oxytocin product or nasal spray.3
What about a spray for social connection or anxiety?
Nasal sprays have been used in research, but the results depend on the question and study population. A small study in autistic children reported a positive social-measure result after accounting for pre-treatment hormone levels; a larger 24-week trial found no significant difference on its social or cognitive measures. These trials do not determine what any individual needs, or establish that a commercial spray improves relationships or anxiety. The stress and mood guide discusses other ways to understand and seek support for distress.67
What should I check about a product?
Ask what the exact product contains, who supplied it, its route and local regulatory status; a hospital injection and an online spray are not interchangeable. The evidence for a particular research preparation does not verify the contents or effects of a different product. Natural occurrence does not establish that an externally administered product is harmless. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, or when using medicines, discuss a specific product with a qualified clinician or pharmacist. Do not infer a personal regimen from a study.37
