The answer so far
AOD-9604 is promoted as a fat-loss peptide, but the promotional label is not a clinical result. Ask what exact product was tested, against what comparator, for how long and with what harms.
AOD-9604 is a synthetic peptide related to part of human growth hormone and marketed for fat loss. An oral obesity study described by FDA did not find a statistically significant weight-loss difference from placebo. That result does not establish the safety or effectiveness of injected products, or make online marketing an approval.42

Why the fragment story is incomplete
AOD-9604 is described as a growth-hormone fragment. Even if a fragment changes a pathway in a model, researchers still need to show that a defined human formulation reaches the relevant tissue and changes a meaningful outcome without unacceptable harms. Explore how research moves from laboratory models to people.
To understand why “fat burning”, appetite and body-weight claims can mean different things, see the guide to weight-loss peptides and fat.

Weight-loss claims need controlled comparisons
A before-and-after change cannot separate a peptide effect from diet, exercise, regression to the mean or selective reporting. A credible weight-loss claim needs a prespecified outcome, comparator, follow-up and transparent harms reporting. Explore how trials compare treatments, how to read a result. For a distinct local approach that is not a peptide, see fat-dissolving injections versus weight-loss claims.
What did the weight-loss study find?
FDA’s 2024 advisory presentation describes the company-sponsored OPTIONS study: 536 adults with obesity enrolled and 502 were included in the randomised, double-blind comparison. Participants received oral AOD-9604 or placebo for 24 weeks alongside a dietitian-supervised diet and exercise programme; the primary weight-loss assessment was at 12 weeks. FDA reported no statistically significant weight-loss difference from placebo. This is a regulator summary of sponsor-reported results, not a full independent trial report reviewed here. The result concerns this oral study and does not prove the effect of a different formulation or route.
Why might an older claim sound more positive? In its 2024 briefing, FDA also described a 2005 conference abstract about a separate 12-week oral study involving 300 adults with obesity. The abstract’s authors reported greater weight loss with AOD-9604 than placebo and described a statistically significant result in women at one studied amount. FDA noted that the differences were small, their clinical meaning was unclear, and the abstract lacked important methods and results; it did not locate a full publication of that study. This is a limited earlier signal, not independent confirmation of the later OPTIONS result or proof of benefit for an injection.46
Can AOD-9604 repair cartilage or treat osteoarthritis?
A joint-repair claim often draws on animal research, not evidence that a person’s cartilage will regrow. In a 2015 experiment, researchers induced knee damage in 32 rabbits and compared saline, hyaluronic acid, AOD-9604 and a combination of the latter two. At the assessment point, the treated groups had lower cartilage-damage scores than the saline group; the combination also had lower scores than either treatment alone. The authors interpreted these findings as enhanced cartilage regeneration in that rabbit model. Tissue scores in an experimentally injured animal do not establish cartilage regrowth, pain relief, safety or function in people with osteoarthritis. In its 2024 briefing, the US FDA said it had not identified clinical studies for osteoarthritis or osteoporosis in its search and did not evaluate whether AOD-9604 was appropriate for those uses. That is a dated regulator finding, not proof that no human use has ever occurred. Discuss persistent joint pain or mobility changes with a qualified clinician; for another peptide’s separate injury evidence, see BPC-157 and healing claims.
For the separate joint question, see what the AOD-9604 cartilage study actually showed.56
What remains unknown about safety?
Evidence from oral administration cannot establish safety for an injection. FDA’s 2024 assessment describes uncertainties about injectable formulations, impurities and immune reactions. The absence of a reported adverse event is not proof that a product is safe: reporting systems can miss events and do not establish how often a harm occurs. Exact product identity, manufacturing quality, route and duration all matter.41
Product quality is part of the question
Unapproved peptide products may have uncertain identity, concentration, sterility and storage. This profile does not provide a dose, sourcing advice or a recommendation for use.23
Development & regulatory context
These selected records are not a complete global legal-status list. Approval depends on the product, use, population and country; check each record’s date.
Products marketed as AOD-9604
No general approval established by online marketing; unapproved products carry quality and evidence concerns
Weight-loss and wellness claims
Regulator safety resources place the burden on a defined product and adequate human evidence; a compound’s proposed mechanism is not an authorisation record.2
